My grandparents were great collectors of string holders, andthis is one from their treasured collection. In excellent shape.
ABOUT STRINGHOLDERS
Before adhesive tape came into general use there was astring holder for just about every use that included general stores,warehouses, home kitchens and offices. Whether a nostalgic cartoon character,an advertising icon or other vintage image, string holders were utilitarian inmany homes and businesses. In the 20th century, string holders became moredecorative, morphing into novelty items for the home. Animals were popularsubjects for these lightweight, chalkware string holders, as were caricaturesof African Americans, cartoony depictions of story-book heroes and heroines,and characters from the movies. Chalkware figures of Shirley Temple, bride,animals, fruit were made in the 30s and 40s. Early designs were made out of cast-iron, but most vintage string holdersfound today were made of chalkware (plaster of Paris) and tend to be chippedaround their edges. Some string holder were made of fired china, typically madein Japan. Either variety, sting holders are one of today’s “hot” collectibles.
