ART NOUVEAU 1890-1905

The peak popularity of the Nouveau movement fell roughly between the Victorian and American Craftsman periods. Like so many artistic movements, it had its origins in Europe. The name \"Art Nouveau\" is actually French for \"new art\". It is characterized by organic and highly curved forms, with particularly strong flora and fauna representations. Like the arts and crafts movement, which was popular in Europe at the time, the goal of Nouveau was to harmonize its forms. However, unlike Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau did not emphasize hand-made objects and instead, like the Victorians, embraced the machine. Art Nouveau hardware is often mistakenly referred to as \"Craftsman\", but is usually more curved and refined, making use of stylized organic forms.
