HISTORY:Wartime WWII CC41 Label ~

The letter \'CC\' stood for \'Civilian Clothing\' or \'Controlled Commodity\' and this label was introduced by the government towards the end of 1941, encompassing most textiles including clothing and linen, in addition to shoes, sports goods and general housewares. Its purpose was to aid the economy and help ‘the war effort’ and, although not actually being of military manufacture, garments were often quite reminiscent of a ‘civilian uniform’.

Raw materials including cloth, wool and leather were in short supply during the war years and had to be conserved via rationing. The styles of garment produced were also subject to ‘austerity’ regulations, which restricted how much cloth, leather etc was to be used ~and the design of each item had to adhere to careful guidelines. For example, women\'s shoes were designed in an often chunky and solid style, with wedges or a low heel ~ open toed shoes were banned as impractical or unsafe ~ whilst men\'s shoes adhered to the usual formula of hard wearing Oxfords or lace up Brogues. The Board of Trade promoted a policy of ‘make do and mend’, and promoted the message of ‘sharing, swapping and second-hand’.

Despite the limitations, utility clothing and shoes was well-cut, well designed, stylish and surprisingly creative as designers found new ways to make their garments appeal to a mindful wartime clientele who craved attractive garments and shoes when and if they could find, and afford, them.Leading designers such as the very famous and renowned Norman Hartnell, Hardy Amies and Edward Molyneux, produced garments for the Utility wardrobe, illustrating the fact that wartime fashion may have been restricted, but it was certainly stylish. Many 1940s vintage pieces, (including shoes and boots), certainly look as if they designed by a leading designer ~ you can see it in the shape, the fall of the soft pleats, the aesthetic flow of the fabric, the fabulous design and cut. Garments ~ and shoes ~ were extremely well-tailored and well made and made to last many seasons, hence the quality of many of the 1940\'s pieces we find today.

Today CC41 clothing has become increasingly desirable and collectible to those who adore to wear the one-off special pieces and for avid collectors alike...their desirability is certainly increased by the rarity of the pieces brandishing the CC41 logo. There are numerous reasons for this, including rationing, meaning that clothing was often worn until it fell apart, additionally, when Britain finally began to prosper again in the 1950s, relics of the war and difficult post-war years were seen as a reminder of the hard times, and discarded. So to find a pair of shoes like this in such amazing condition and with the CC41 branding so intact is just so incredibly rare and special.

These vintage 1940s luxury shoes would have been a very coveted item all those long wartime years ago ~ especially as suede and leather were in such short supply ~ and even more more so because they are so elegant and stylish with the added refinement of sexy ankle straps. Over seventy years has passed since they were first made and they are as timeless and beautiful as they would have been then, and to see them and wear them is to know why...don\'t miss these ones, they are a unique piece of fashion history and a pair of unique beauties to wear and love.....

What is also interesting is that these shoes have also been stuffed with vintage newspaper, dating back to 1953, although it is are not as old as the shoes, the fact that the paper remains is lovely, and has held the shape of the shoe so perfectly. In addition the shoes come in a cardboard box, unfortunately we cannot say that the box is definitely original, though it does look as if it is likely to be...It is marked on the side with \'LADIES FOOTWEAR\' and with \'BLACK SUEDE SANDAL COVERED HEEL\' and size 5 ~ which does point to the box being original as the words and size do accurately describe these shoes. The bottom part of the box is box a little dented etc but in quite good condition ~ the lid is slightly more battered and missing a bit of cardboard down one edge.

The shoes themselves are in absolutely excellent vintage condition, they barely look worn at all given that they are wartime shoes. Bearing in mind that they are of course vintage and not brand new, the suede is still perfectly in tact & the inside lining shows very little sign of wear...though these shoes are now over 70 years old and have definitely been worn, so there is some wear to the sole and the heel, but they are still in absolutely fabulous vintage condition ~ especially for vintage shoes which are almost impossible to find in good condition!!!

Please see sizing below.
