HISTORY:Wartime WWII CC41 Label ~

The letter \'CC\' stood for \'Civilian Clothing\' or \'Controlled Commodity\' and this label was introduced by the government towards the end of 1941, encompassing most textiles including clothing and linen, in addition to sports goods and general housewares. Its purpose was to aid the economy and help ‘the war effort’ and, although not actually being of military manufacture, garments were often quite reminiscent of a ‘civilian uniform’.

Raw materials including cloth, wool and leather were in short supply during the war years and had to be conserved via rationing. The styles of garment produced were also subject to ‘austerity’ regulations, which restricted how much cloth was to be used. The Board of Trade promoted a policy of ‘make do and mend’, and promoted the message of ‘sharing, swapping and second-hand’.

Despite the limitations, utility clothing was well-cut, stylish and surprisingly creative as designers found new ways to make their garments appeal to a mindful wartime clientele who craved attractive garments when and if they could find, and afford, them.Leading designers such as the very famous and renowned Norman Hartnell, Hardy Amies and Edward Molyneux, produced garments for the Utility wardrobe, illustrating the fact that wartime fashion may have been restricted, but it was certainly stylish. Many 1940s vintage pieces certainly look as if they designed by a leading designer ~ you can see it in the shape, the fall of the soft pleats, the aesthetic flow of the fabric, the fabulous design and cut. Garments were well-tailored and made to last many seasons, hence the quality of many of the 1940\'s pieces we find today.

This vintage 1940s luxury coat would have been a very coveted item all those long wartime years ago...over seventy years has passed since it was first made and it is as timeless and beautiful as it was then, and to see it and wear it is to know why...don\'t miss this one, it is a unique piece of fashion history and a unique beauty to wear and love.....

STYLING:1940s Coats

Women’s fashion in the 1940s combined style and practicality to achieve a lasting elegance. With jackets shorter thanks to rationing, the peplum became hugely popular, helping to narrow the hips while showing off a trim waist. It was also common for women to re-use their coats from the 1930s, altering them slightly by cutting off the bottom of the coat and hemming it to knee length.Classic cuts with no fabric excess were key, often with military influences ~ accordingly wide lapels or double breasted buttoning & shoulder pads became popular styles.

As women often lived by the ‘make-do-and-mend” mantra during the war years, men’s coats became a popular choice ~ the oversized, draped style became quite fashionable, as did the swing coat, with women occasionally reusing an old coat belt, or other belt, to draw in the waist in that hour-glass shape we\'ve come to associate with the 1940s silhouette, while others enjoyed the free flowing swing cut.

Despite restrictions on designers and rationing of materials, the 1940s has played a key role in fashion history and despite the wartime limitations incredible trends still emerged from those wartime years, and many of these styles are quintessential pieces in the modern woman’s wardrobe today.

True vintage pieces from this era, especially tjose very rare items with the CC41 wartime stamp, are now incredibly sought after for their exquisite tailoring, quality fabrics and of course their quintessential and timeless glamour...
