W & T AVERY Ltd.,is a British manufacturer of weighing machines.The company was founded in the early 18th century and took the name W & T Avery in 1818 and was made a public company in 1894. Around 1900the managing director William Hipkins determined to broaden the renown of the Avery brand and transformed the business into a specialist manufacturer of weighing machines. He perished on the TITANIC.

There is no verification stamp and the stamps under the weights are inconclusive for dating purposes. I would guess they date to around 1900 but am open to correction if necessary.

They are 12 inches wide and 7 inches high.

I would say they are in remarkable condition for their age. There are some inoffensive marks to the black paintwork.

They balance well. Should they ever get out of balance the ball bearing box is accessed by undoing the 2 screws on the weight stand.

There is only one brass pan. Weights are placed on the weights stand.

The brass pans is slightly discoloured in places, as it is so shiny these marks do not detract from the overall appearance.Brass is soft and when potentially corrosive stuff, like salt, is placed in the bowl and not wiped clean a reaction happens and the surface of the copper is affected. Sometimes it can be almost all removed but it rather depends on how long the stuff was left in there. Almost every bowl I come across has some similar marks. There are also a couple of dents in the pan one to the rim.

The 1/2 oz Avery weight is missing from the set and I have used a SIDDONS weight which stacks well with the others. If I acquire an Avery 1/2 oz weight I will send it to you.

Since the reign of Henry V and probably earlier, local standards were issued through the Exchequer and weights were stamped when verified as to weight. Towns and Counties also used verification stamps.

The stamps read \"CROWN 1150 and 88\".

I cannot really identify these stamps. 88 could be the number for LANCASTER COUNTY. Or it could have been the year 1888.

1150 is way too high to have represented a County. And the first \"1\" is different to the next so may have been 150 for YORKS NORTH RIDING.

I have only buffed them up leaving the buyer to clean them further if desired.

I will mail these scales from the UK. I have reviewed the delivery performance of the UK courier so far and it is between 2 and 7 days, an average of 4 days. For other destinations such as China delivery will be around 15 working days.

You may be concerned that they have to be sent such a long way but I can assure you there is no need. I use large sturdy boxes and pack all the spaces so they remain rigid. The scales are wrapped in large bubble wrap and bound with tape so they do not move about. The weights are packed separately also in large bubble wrap.
