THIS ITEM IS A FANG MASK, AND IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION FOR ITS AGE. THE MASK IS ABOUT 20 1/4 INCHES TALL AND 7 INCHES WIDE AT THE WIDEST POINT. IT HAS USE IN ITS HISTORY, AND CAN BE SEEN FROM THE BACK OF THE MASK PICTURE. THIS PIECE, AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF OTHERS, WERE SOLD INDIVIDUALLY AT AN sale IN HOUSTON IN THE MID 80\'S AS THE ESTATE/COLLECTION OF CARL C. PROVOST. MR. PROVOST COLLECTED THEM IN THE EARLY 1950\'S---HE WAS IN THE CONSULAR SERVICE OF THE STATE DEPARTMENT, AND WAS STATIONED IN WEST AFRICA AT THIS TIME---HE TRAVELED EXTENSIVELY FROM THE THEN BELGIAN CONGO TO THE SAHEL, AND WEST TO LIBERIA, BUYING OLD MASKS AND OTHER ITEMS. MY GUESS IS THIS PIECE IS AT LEAST CIRCA WWII OR BEFORE. I BOUGHT THE ITEMS IN 1988 THROUGH 1989 FROM THE ANTIQUES DEALER WHO WON THEM AT THE sale. I AM NOW PUTTING THEM ON WITH NEW ONES ADDED EVERY FEW DAYS. PLEASE SEE THE PICTURES AND EXPAND THEM AS THEY ARE A MAJOR PART OF THE DESCRIPTION. NOTE: The Fang, or Beti-Pahuin are a Bantu ethnic group located in rain forest regions of Cameroon, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Though they separate themselves into several individual clans, they all share a common origin, history and culture.
