Item Description:
This vintage Hopi sifter basket measures 13\" long by 11 1/2\" wide by 2 3/4\" high. This basket is made of plaited yucca and has a foundation of what looks to be sumac. The diamond plaited design is often the first design taught to a Hopi woman learning to weave baskets. This type of yucca sifter basket is made by women on all three Hopi mesas and is the basic utility basket. It is used for a variety of tasks--as a colander, a sifter, a winnowing tray, and a catch basin for shelling corn. This basket is in excellent vintage condition.
