ThisHopi Polychrome Coil Basket with Handle was made in 1950. The dimensions are 7.25 inches by 9 inches.
Ex Carl and Aggie Landel Collection, Tucson Arizona. The Landels were passionate collectors of Native American Art. They were married for 67 years, and they traveled throughout the southwest collecting and sharing a love of the southwest\'s natural beauty and native cultures. For years they traveled to various Indian villages and rug sales while also promoting Aggie\'s art career. Aggie met artist Ted DeGrazia on a visit to Tucson who encouraged her to focus on painting and in 1967, she was invited to show her work in \"Gallery in the Sun.\" In 2007, she had a one woman show at the gallery. Carl served for over 32 years in municipal government to include first financial director and city clerk Adrian Michigan, City Manager Pueblo Colorado, City Manager Carlsbad, NM and Administrative Manager of Housing City of Tucson. We are pleased to offer these loving collected items from the Landel estate.

The Hopi Reservation is located in northEastern Arizona. TheHopi Reservation is completely surrounded by the Navajo Reservation. Within theHopi Reservation are three Mesas which contain Hopi Villages: First Mesa(Walpi, Hano and Sichomoivi), Second Mesa (Shongopavi, Mishongnovi,Shipaulovi,and Third Mesa, (Hotevilla, Bacavi, Moencopi, Kykotsmovi and Oraibi. HopiIndian Basket weavers gather plant materials, using the natural background tocontrast with their vivid designs typically in red, yellow, and black. HopiNative American basket makers use three basic techniques: plating(cradle boardsand Piki trays), wicker(Third Mesa)and coiling (Second Mesa). Hopi Indianbaskets are made from rabbit brush, sumac, dune brush and yucca. Hopi NativeAmerican Baskets are symbolic of Hopi Life past and present, religion, dances,rainmaking, corn harvest and rites of passage.
