Opaline glass or cristal d\'opale first appeared in France during the Empire period, was produced in different colors and shades, was very popular then and remains popular now a days. Opaque or slightly translucent glass looks like an opal when light hits it, hence the name. The Box stands on gilt ormolu pedestal in form of an angel 9 7/8\" (25 cm); diameter at the opening 4 1/2\" (11.5 cm). It is in excellent condition, considering age. No chips, cracks or repair.
