VINTAGE NAVAJO SERAPE/BLANKET Circa 1870s:
$7800.00

Navajo Late Classic blanket/Serape, circa 1870\'s. Size 4\' 2\" x 6\' 4\" (50\" x 76\"). Colors: red, indigo 2 hues of indigo, (of which one indigo color was purple) off white, orange and a grass green. Excellent condition with some old hand done repairs with fine cotton thread. The Serape was previously cleaned. Purchased from Susan Parrish of NYC who passed away several years ago.The warp is one single strand of Homespun natural white Sheep\'s wool throughout. The weft is as follows: Red/Orange main body of blanket/Serape is \"one single strand of homespun sheep\'s wool throughout.\" Green is: \"one single strand of homespun sheep\'s wool throughout\". Indigo: It looks of raveled nature. (see photos). Not the same as the one strand homespun. The wool is of a much thinner nature and looks as if it is doubled or tripled, in places so to keep the thickness the same as the other colors of one strand thickness homespun that is much thicker than the indigo strand. Also, the indigo has more of a finer and erratic placement of yarn strands being thinner strands than the rest. Also, the row of indigo which is on the top and bottom of the blanket are the same color through and through as I separated the top strands and down through is exactly the same color indigo all the way through, no fading at all. Another hue of blue are the 2 rows of indigo which are sandwiched in between and are a decidedly \"brighter blue\" than the other. On careful examination, (THE 2 INNER ROWS OF BLUE INDIGO WERE AT ONE TIME PURPLE) Unlike the top and bottom rows of blue indigo that have no purple whatsoever. That could be the reason for the 2 different hues of blues. (see photo 6 and the last 2 photos 11 and 12 of the purple showing through the indigo). It shows through in many places within the 2 inner rows and it is affirmative that this indigo was purple at one time. This weaving is medium/heavy in weight and is of medium thickness. It has previous moth bites, but mostly on surface. The top and bottom ends are thinned in some areas and were hand stitched by someone using a fine cotton thread to repair it to keep it together. This Serape has brilliant color, fantastic design and a work of art. All in all it is a Serape from the past that lives today with some scars but incredibly stable and strong for use. It is a well executed piece of history...... IF THIS ITEM DOES NOT MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS RETURN IT HASSLE FREE.
