MARTIAL COTTLE PARK

SAN JOSE — You won’t find a crowd on any given weekend at Martial Cottle Park, an island of working farmland amid the suburbs of South San Jose.

Santa Clara County’s newest park doesn’t have major draws like ballfields or amusement attractions or even a bona fide playground, but 5-year-old Jacob Welch wouldn’t know that.

“Tractor king!” hollered Jacob, perched atop a replica John Deere with his arms upraised in a victory salute Sunday afternoon.

Martial Cottle Park, which opened in 2014 and is still introducing itself to South Bay residents, offers simple pleasures, and a throwback to the region’s agrarian roots.

“It’s just a nice oasis in the middle of a city,” said Jacob’s father, Tim Welch, who grew up on a dairy farm in Ohio but now lives in Blossom Hill. “We can ride our bikes here and I like that it’s a county park — it’s secure.”

Park rangers Kristy Barton and Lisa Pappanastos led a tour of the visitors center, showing Cupertino residents Hemant Lele, his wife, Sonal, and daughter Aastha, 12, the curious implements of Silicon Valley’s past, such as the “Calf-e-teria,” a bucket with a rubber teat protruding from the bottom.

“They’d wean the calf from real milk right after it was born,” Barton said. “They would have it on powdered milk.”

That’s the sort of agricultural tidbit that the Cottle family wanted to pass along to future generations, Barton said. The late Walter Cottle Lester didn’t want the family’s 360 acres to become a garden-variety green space.

“The purpose here is for learning about the farming, that’s what Mr. Lester wanted it to be,” said Paula Hammer, who was visiting the park on Sunday and serves as a docent for children on field trips during the week.

Still, there are trails to hike on along with the visitors center and farm-themed “Discovery Park,” which, as Jacob noted, is suspiciously playground-like — even if park managers don’t call it that.

The Jacobs Farm fruitstand recently had a soft opening, bringing a trickle of people by to pick up plums or dry-farmed tomatoes, which were only watered twice in their life back when they were seedlings.

“You rip the ground down to 3 feet deep,” said David Tuttle, a former tech engineer who now manages the stand and serves as a docent for those inclined to inquire about the park. “Then it gets watered, heavily, an eight-hour session. The roots learn to follow the water down.”

The old farm was established by Edward Cottle in 1864 and remained in the family until 2014, the 150-year legacy of a Missouri-born man who emigrated to the valley via covered wagon. He raised cattle and planted grain and row crops and, for a while in the early 20th century, leased out parts of the land to Japanese tenant farmers who grew sugar beets, onions, carrots, peppers and strawberries.

Some of the buildings used by the farmers are still there, but that’s a part of the park that will be off-limits for five or six years while it’s cleaned up and made more presentable. Then it will be part of a site museum, Barton said, a la Emma Prusch Farm Park.

“We have a lot of the family’s personal property, and you need that to better tell the story,” said Pappanastos. “We have so much that we’ll have to rotate it.”

While that’s down the line, Hemant Lele said the appeal of a working farm park is literally growing, and he’ll be back in the near future.

“Maybe in four weeks, when those particular sunflowers are up,” said Lele, pointing at a row outside the recently opened fruitstand on busy Snell Avenue. “We love nature, we love spending weekends in the parks, and this is the only one with a farm. It’s kind of sweet here, this right in the middle of the city. It’s the best of both worlds.”
