From a Tucson estate some years ago and a remembrance of some visit to the vicinity of Gallup (or perhaps purchased from one of the fabled curio shops right here in the Old Pueblo) is this attractive vintage I believe 1970\'s or so Robert and Bernice Leekya Zuni bolo, well crafted of sterling silver and with three (3) nice carved turquoise sets - construction features fully demonstrating the skill of this well known artisan duo. The silver work here is excellent and the color and black matrix of the turquoise add measurably to the visual charm and that distinct look - this is a favored Leekya design and from within their best working period. Robert Leekya is the son of famed carver Leekya Deyuse, and Bernice is the daughter of Warren and Doris Ondelacy and sister of Alice Quam; they married in 1953, and have crafted wearable artworks for over five decades. Weight is good for the form at about 40.1 gross grams (including leather cords) on my portable digital scale. Condition is quite fine with a wonderful aura of genuine age as seen in the pics. I have avoided any cleaning of the silver. Those turquoise inlays are all present and accounted. The plaited leather cord is clean and supple, the Bennett type slide is present and good to go. There is an old dent to one of the sterling silver tips on the plaited leather cord. That said, there are otherwise just typical and expected and in this case minor signs of period purposeful use, again simply more evidence of the real thing. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition...a very charismatic Zuni bolo. Size of the bolo slide is about 2 3/8 in. long (vertical) and 1 9/16 in. across; silver end tips on the cords are about 1 15/16 in. long. If you collect 20th Century Southwestern tribal referenced silver adornment and especially upper tier Zuni work as this, or simply wish this single noticeable improvement to the ambiance of each day, this will have great meaning for you.
