We have not cleaned this item. It was purchaseda few years ago from a direct descendant of USPresident Herbert Hoover, who, along with his wifeand family were known to love and show dogs.We were unable to find a reference to thisparticular Chow Chow being owned by theHoover\'s, though the name Hoover is writtenon the bottom of the trophy. It was won in 1922at a dog show in Toledo, Ohio at the Hotel Secor. The dog\'s name was Lu Cheng. We did find thefollowing two references:Dogdom Monthly vol.21 March 1920,\"Lu cheng, John Richardson\'s very attractiveyoung stud.\" Also an advertisement in Sept. 1921Country Life volume 40 for \"Chow Chows of Quality.Champion Lu Cheng, dark red, (stud) fee $40.John Richardson, Glenville, Conn. Finally, a May 1922 reference in The Dog Fancier(published in Battle Creek, Michigan). \"Chow ChowWinner dogs---H. E. Hoover\'s Chow Lu Cheng\".Herbert Hoover\'s middle name was Clark, however,so we cannot claim with certainty that this trophybelonged to the former US President, despite whatwe were told by the person we purchased it from.
This substantial Heintz Art Metal trophy weighsabout 3 pounds. No dents or tears in the metal. Most likely there is a special technique forcleaning these silver on bronze pieces, whichwe leave to the new owner to research. A 1990book, Heintz Art Metal Silver on Bronze Wares,by Kevin McConnell would be a good source. It is currently offered by another seller on .
Seller\'s update on Hoover information:In a message received from a more knowledgable member, \"Dark Red Champion Lu Cheng, winner of many trophies is another of the lights ofthe kennels.......at the Manchoover Kennels, ownedby Mrs. H. Earl Hoover of Wilmette, Illinois.....\"article on her Chow Chow Kennel from the newspaperWilmette Life dated Friday, May 16, 1924.
