Item Description:

This vintage Zuni silver pin shows an intricately crafted Zuni Sunface in a turquoise headdress and earrings. It measures 1\" tall and 1 1/8\" across. There is a thin hairline crack in one of the turquoise earrings and a very small chip in one of the pieces of shell at the edge. But, otherwise, this beautifully crafted pin is in great vintage condition. For the Zuni, the Sunface represents the Sun which is the bringer of life, prosperity and joy. To the Zuni, giving respect and prayers to the Sun is as natural as breathing. From a craftsmanship perspective, the Sunface is one of the pinnacles of Zuni inlay artistry. It requires exacting cuts and an extremely high level of skill to appropriately create the fine inlay used in the Sunface. The center inlay will represent the face of the Sun. The forehead is usually split into two sections which symbolize the coming and going of the sun; sunrise and sunset or the day and night. When the Sunface is reprsented with a headdress it represents the sky as seen above a horizon. The earrings reprsent the clouds and rain, giving life to the earth.
