They were made in Germany, although they are unmarked. They are white, with little gilt shoes (the gilt on the shoes is worn). The porcelain is hollow, with no chips, cracks or breaks. They are tiny, measuring just 1 7/8\" long, and 3/4\" across the top. The half dolls are the top half porcelain dolls that were made to be inserted into a round plump pin cushion. The pin cushion formed the skirt for the dolls. Occasionally, legs were added - they were inserted in the side of the pin cushion, which gave the illusion that the lady was reclining!. These legs are charming, and quite hard to find, especially in this tiny size! These legs are white, although I have seen them in flesh color.
These half doll pin cushions were often quite seductive in their looks and poses, so were most often displayed in the boudoir (bedroom), often on the ladies vanity.
