DescriptionThis lovely little miniature is made from wood, and comes from the Erzgebirge region of Germany, although it is unmarked. It is hand made and hand painted, and vintage from the 1920\'s. It measures 2 3/4\" tall, and the \"bulb\" (wooden) is attached with a wire at the top. It has no breaks or damage, just some yellowing to the varnish and crackling to the paint. It has a wonderful patina (the aged look that items get over time).
The Erzgebirge region of Germany is home to families of folk artists that have been making wood miniatures, holiday items, and novelties for hundreds of years. The area was once rich in ore, but when the ore ran out, the people turned to the forests to make their living. They passed their knowledge, tools and patterns down through the generations.
The old pieces were often sold through specialty catalogs in the US. Once such distributor was Louis Lange, a German publisher in the 1920\'s. His 1920\'s catalogs were filled with the little German village pieces, as well as ornaments, and toys. The miniatures were most often sold in play sets, but could also be purchased separately. The sets were often used for train villages, and for Christmas Putz villages.
Christmas Putz villages are the scenes that people display under their trees each year. The tradition is hundreds of years old, and probably started in Germany (Putz is the German word for plaster.) Many of the original sets were made from plaster or composite.
The scenes are as varied as the families who make them - old and new pieces are combined with personal charm. I have lots of vintage miniature pieces for sale, so take a look!
