Thisis a 16-Page (Plus Covers) report outlining the plan to put asatellite into orbit for the International Geophysical Year. This isin Very Good condition with a slight crease running down the center.

Thereis no date on this publication but my research places this in 1956.

Thisoutlines the plan to place a 20-Inch Diameter, 21 ½ Lb “Moon”into space in the International Geophysical Year.

(IGY was designatedJuly 1, 1957 - December 31, 1958)

ThisVanguard project publication called for a 3-Stage Rocket:

1stStage being an improved Viking built by Martin Company of Baltimore

2ndStage being built for Martin by the Aerojet-General corporation ofAzusa, California

3rdStage VANGUARD rocket was to be built by The Grand Central RocketCompany of Redlands, California and the Allegany BallisticsLaboratory of Cumberland, Maryland

The3-Axis reference System was to be built by The Minneapolis-HoneywellRegulator Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

VANGUARDwas to be launched from

PatrickAir Force base in Florida

Trackingwould be done by the

Minitracksystem, developed by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory

Computingwould be done by the International Business Machines 704 and alsomake use of the 740 Cathode Ray Tube monitor.

Notethat these are all very early plans for the Vanguard Project. Theeventual Vanguard Satellite (Which is STILL in orbit) measured 6.4inches in diameter and weight 3.2 Lbs.

Thisis an outstanding piece of history in the space race.
