  • Made in Seki Japan
  • Condition: Excellent/Near Mint
  • Overall Length: 12\"
  • Blade: 1/4\" thick x 6 5/8\" long; \"Soldier of Fortune 1996\" etch (looks like it was put over a previous etching which is faintly visible); there is a small ding/wear in clip on top of blade; the Original factory edge is present, but it appears to have been lightly sharpened once; it is sharp
  • Handle: Black micarta with brass guard and aluminum/red/white/black spacers; back of pommel has some visible dings but the handle looks great overall
  • Comes with original Al Mar sheath (no sharpening stone, it is missing)
  • This is an amazing knife! Super sturdy and well made!
  • Below is some interesting additional information on this style:

  • During the Vietnam conflict, the U.S. Army\'s Special Forces commissioned a combat knife for members of its S.O.G. (Studies and Observation Group) teams. These were made in Okinawa and bear no maker\'s markings. This is Al Mar\'s homage to that knife and the forces that used it. It is made better than the original!Initiated by Colonel Nick Rowe, creator of the Special Operations Command\'s SERE (Survive, Escape, Resistance, Evasion) School at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, capable of meeting the stringent demands required in combat/survival situations.MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observation Group) was an unconventional warfare task force engaged in highly classified operations throughout Southeast Asia. The U.S. Army\'s Special Forces (Green Berets), Air Force Combat Controllers, Navy SEALs and other units channeled personnel into MACV-SOG through Special Operations Augmentation (SOA), which provided their \"cover\" while under secret orders to MACV-SOG. The teams performed deep penetration missions of strategic reconnaissance and interdiction which were called, depending on the time frame, \"Shining Brass\" or \"Prairie Fire\" missions.Al Mar was working for an industrial design firm in Los Angeles in 1967. Gerber\'s first designer retired about this time and Al Mar joined Gerber Legendary Blades in 1967 or 68 after Pete Gerber gave Al the task of coming up with an aluminum handle for a kitchen knife. Pete Gerber thought the project was very successful and offered Al a position as design chief. Did you know that Al is credited with designing the Gerber Mark I?He left Gerber in 1979 to start Al Mar Knives and he died in October of 1992. Al was 54 years old. The new owners have now discontinued most of the original models and moved to other makers on the remaining models. This leaves the knives made while Al was in control of the company very desirable and collectible!
