This type of piece is meant to be used with tiny candles (not included). The heat from the candles makes the blades at the top rotate. The little instructions in the box (near as I could translate) warn against having candles close to the wood. From my own experience, the wood burns really easily. I don\'t really recommend using candles. The little instructions say that it will rotate just fine if placed near a heating vent. Or, if you live in Florida like I do, an air conditioning vent!

It feautres three little angels. It is made from solid wood with stamped decorations down the side. It is beautifully crafted, and stands 5\" tall. The wood is \"unfinished\" - with no varnish or lacquer - just painted accents. It spins freely, and is quite charming. The blades are \"fixed\" and glued in place.

Anyway the piece comes in a hand made, staple constructed box. The little piece itself is hand made, and stamped on the bottom made in German Democratic Republic (East Germany). There is an Erzgebirge sticker on the side, which also says Expertic.

Germany was divided into East and West after WWII. East Germany was behind the Berlin Wall, and the Iron Curtain, and controlled by the USSR (until 1989, when the wall came down).

Erzgebirge was a region in Germany also sometimes called Ore Mountains, that was in both East and West Germany. Families in this region, for generations (and still today) made wood toys and decorations. The East German pieces are harder to find than the West German pieces, for obvious reasons! Around 1968, a cooperative of families in East Germany formed the \"Expertic\" group, and made toys and decorations that were sold in the West, until 1989, when the wall came down and all items were marked simply Germany, again.

Items marked East Germany were either sold through the Expertic cooperative, OR were made behind the Iron Curtain and didn\'t find their way to the US until after 1989.

This little pyramid, which doesn\'t appear to have been used, was made in the 1970\'s, and was part of the exports.
