A Best Offer May Be Considered Before The End of The sale,So Don’t Be Afraid To Ask.

Extremely Rare and I Mean Unbelievably Rare Mid 16th Century Solid Oak German Wooden Strongbox, Chest, Coffer.

With Beautiful Huge Complicated Double Spring Bolt Lock.

Circa 1550 - 1580

The huge double bolted spring lock is a collectors piece in its own right. However, it should never separated from its original home. The lock would have originally been nailed in place but as you can see by the key, which is not original and is a Georgian replacement. The lock was probably temporarily removed to allow for the key to be made and then the lock was returned to its position. I took the lock and photos of the chest to the Victoria and Albert Museum some years ago to confirm age and origin and one of the curators showed me similar ones from their collection which is consistent with the description above.

This chest is made of solid over 1inch thick oak and is extremely heavy and really needs two people to carry it comfortably.

The chest is likely to have been made in Germany (Nuremberg) and was most probably used as a strongbox in a wealthy household.

Chests like these come up for sale very very rarely. So if you are a collector of oak and country furniture, this is a great opportunity that is unlikely to be repeated that easily.

Condition is clear to see that it is fantastic and the only thing I have done to it was to lower the key hole plate a couple of millimetres because the key was so difficult to insert. What has happened quite naturally over the centuries is the wood has shrunk very slowly and therefore the iron lock which of course won\'t shrink has then become slightly out of alinement with the wood. Other than that the whole thing is totally original and as such is a rare thing to find.
