2x7 \"Buchanan and Breckinridge\" ribbon with an oval portrait of Buchanan at center, framed to 8-1/2 x 13-1/2\"; shows moderate fraying at top and bottom edges, light traces of soiling in the upper and lower field areas and an unobtrusive fold across the portrait, otherwise graphics remain very bold; The administration of 15th POTUS James Buchanan only delayed the inevitable. Buchanan won the 1856 presidential election, defeating Republican John Fremont who got virtually no votes in Southern States and \"Know Nothing\" candidate Millard Fillmore, who carried only Maryland. A Northern Democrat from Pennsylvania, Buchanan sympathized with the South and efforts to expand slavery to Western Territories. Had Fremont won the 1856 election, the Civil War would have started then, rather than in 1861 when Abraham Lincoln took office.
