VERY RARE 1899 cover from St Kilda sent by \"Float Mail\" + washed up in Norway.:

1899 a stampless envelope with damp-affected letter headed \"St Kilda N.B. June 28th 1899\" addressed to London and endorsed in pencil \"1d for stamp\" by sender (this may have been sent separately inside the \"mail boat\" plank, but kept by the finder) on the front and \"Found driving on the sea in a plank, North Haugesund, Norway\" on reverse, and so having a purple British Vice Consulate {Arms} Haugesund\" cachet on front and a matching Consular red seal on the reverse. The letter was then handed to the Haugesund P.O. and bears the circular datestamp on front for 10 Oct 99 with matching \"T\" and has a British \"Found Open and Officially Sealed\" labels with Newcastle on Tyne c.d.s.\'s around the edges, From Newcastle the letter was sent to London with a 5d/545 Postage Due marking finally arriving on OC 13 99. The letter talks about living on St Kilda and the slender chance of the letter ever being delivered. It is significant that the first St Kilda P.O. was opended a year later in June 1900. A very rare item and probably one of the most important items to emanate from St Kilda. Bov#771
