An extremelyrare and interestingancient Greek silverdrachm fromthe Greek South Italian colony of Rhegion, Bruttium. Struckunder Tyrant Anaxilas circa 478 - 476BC.

The obverse with Anaxilas seated anddriving biga of mules right, holding reins in both hands.

The reversewith young hare withpinned backears springing right. The legend reading:

Anaxilas came to power at Rhegion in 494 BC and soon after conquering the Sicilian city of Messana (formerly Zankle) began to issue a series of biga/hare coinage at both Rhegion and Messana.

We knowfrom the writings of Aristotle that Anaxilas won the mule-biga race at the Olympic games of 484 or 480, a joyous occasion for Rhegion which is here proudly commemorated on his coinage. The charming reverse type of the bounding harecelebrates another of the Tyrant\'s achievements for it is alsowrittenthat Anaxilas was responsible for introducing the hare to Sicily, where it has henceforth flourished.

A far rarerpiece than the well known tetradrachms of this type, nicely toned and one of the finest examples we have ever seen on the mm.

Dr LA formed one of the most charming and personal collections of ancient coins that we have handled. The theme was his childhood passion for animals, which began at the age of seven when he found and nursed a young, wounded owl.

He collected for many years, selecting only beautiful and well preserved examples. The coins he purchased show depictions of wild animals, a fascination that he shared with the
artists who made them.

What marks this collection out in particular is the wonderful, old cabinet toning these coins enjoy, giving the designs a pleasing depth that truly enhances their beauty.
