with ORIGINAL BOXDESCRIPTIONAhand-held electromagnetic apparatuscontaining mercury and, some say, \"rare gasses\". Promoted for its ability to convert ordinary tap water in the home into therapeutic bathing and drinking water with healing powers related to a wide range of medical conditions.The medical claims are comparable to those made by mineral hot spring spas, resorts and \"hospitals\" which were popular at this time. The Scalebuoywas also sold for a remarkably diverse list of other uses benefits.
The device consists of a spherical glass bulb containing a small amount of mercury (and unidentified \"rare gases\") which is protected by a sturdy 6-rib wire cage. A collar connects the electroplated handle to the cage.
When shaken in bath (or other) water (1 minute for warm water, 15 seconds longer for cold) frictional forces between the mercury and the glass were said to activate electronic energy. The resulting change in the water\'s chemistry was thought to counteract the effects of impurities, remove scale, rust, and hardness. Treated water was thus rendered therapeutic for medical conditions and of benefit for many other purposes.HISTORY
The Scalebuoy was invented by Richard Hartley Smith Abbott, a well known Bendigo businessman, following World War I. This particular item wasmanufactured by The Bualeboy Company and distributed by W.H. Cunningham & Hill, Limited in Toronto, Canadabetween 1930 and 1940. This Scalebuoy is included in the Harvard University Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments and can be viewed online in their E-Museum.
