Very Rare Baga or Bulunits, A-Tshol shrine figure, Guinea Africa - Museum Piece:
$4999.99

An original, sacred shrine figure of northern Baga. These figures were outlawed by the Marxist government of Guinea at the nations independence in 1958. Since the fall of that government a few have come out of hiding. Our figure is very well sculpted, with good symmetry and detail. The A-Tshol is mounted on a seperate cylindrical base. The figure has openings along the side and a sagital crest. This curious looking sculpture combines the elongated beak, head, and neck of a tall, water bird together with elements of a human face. Pouring magical substances into the openings of the head activates the ritual powers of this sculpture, which normally resides in a private family shrine. Like the long-legged wading birds that fish in the coastal lagoons where the Baga live, the powers of the a-Tshol will seek out the dangerous forces that might harm the family members. It is said to be a composite creature capable of traveling through earth, air and water. This piece is from a private collection an measures 32.25\" long, height on base 20\".
