VERY RARE CIVIL WAR BROADSIDE -- SOUTH CAROLINA ACT OF SECESSIONAN UNUSUALLY FINE COPY of a fragile broadside. \"THE UNION IS DISSOLVED!\" SOUTH CAROLINA VOTES TO SECEDE FROM THE UNION A RARE BROADSIDE, ONE OF THE FIRST CONFEDERATE IMPRINTS. One of only 200 copies printed, an imposing, large-format, lithographic facsimile of the original engrossed and signed manuscript Act of Secession, carefully prepared from the original engrossed document. The document features facsimile signatures of D.F. Jamison, President of the Convention, and 169 delegates to the Secession Convention convened by Governor Pickens (even the ink blots which mar the original are carefully reproduced by the lithographers). Charleston, S.C.: Evans & Cogswell], n.d. [ca. March 1861]. Folio broadside (33¾ x 26.58 in).Condition: CHRISTIE\'S 2011 review of the document -- Lithographed in black ink on heavy wove paper. Even, light age-toning, very minor marginal tears discreetly mended, several tiny rust spots, otherwise AN UNUSUALLY FINE COPY of a fragile broadside. Provenance: William Dunlap Simpson (1823-1890), an eminent South Carolina legislator and Governor. A lawyer, Simpson served in the South Carolina House of Representative (1854-1856, 1858-60) and the state Senate (1860-1863). He held the rank of Lt. Colonel in the 14th South Carolina Volunteers and was a delegate to the Confederate State House (1863-1865). After the Civil War, Simpson was elected Lt. Governor (1876-1879) and for a brief period he was Governor (1879-1880) before serving as Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court (1880-1890).VERY RARE: according Christie\'s research in 2011: American Book Prices Current, only two other examples have appeared at sale in at least a quarter century (one copy sold at Christie\'s, 24 May 2002, lot 33, $55,000 and 3 December 2007, lot 110, $46,600).
