Very Rare E &HT Anthony Stereoview - War Views #2389 - Cemetery Gate, Gettysburg:
$165.00

Up for sale is an extremely rare stereoview of the Evergreen Cemetery Gate in Gettysburg. This stereoview is a Mathew Brady negative. According to William A. Frassanito, the leading expert in Gettysburg stereoviews, this stereoview was taken several days after the battle, and is one of two versions in the E & H.T Anthony catalog of this subject. (The other is view #2388). I have not been able to find any views of this stereoview online. View #2388 has Mathew Brady in his large-brimmed hat to the right of the Cemetery gatehouse, and can be found in Wm. Frassanito\'s \"Early Photography at Gettysburg\". (pg 148) This view has two men standing in the yard to the right of the gatehouse, with the gazebo behind them.
This view is missing the revenue stamp, but it was present at one time, as you can see where it used to be on the back. It has either fallen off, or was taken off by some philatelist uninterested in stereoviews. The stamp would have served further to date the view, as well as the price paid for the view at the time. As it is, this view had to come from around 1864 or 1865, as the law requiring the stamp was repealed after the war.
The condition of the view is Excellent to Very Good. The view is a marigold color, and has \"PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY\" on the left panel, and \"THE WAR FOR THE UNION\" on the right. No appreciable bumping of the corners, no stains or markings on the image itself. There is some handling wear on the back on the left-hand side, where the viewer put the view into the stereoscope. This is to be expected from normal use, although this view appears to perhaps been viewed by a more attentive person, or was not viewed as much. The rear panel has pasted on it \"WAR VIEWS\", Cemetery Gate, Gettysburgh. No. 2389. Below the identification is \"Published by E.& H.T. Anthony & Co., American and Foreign Stereoscopic Emporium, 501 Broadway, New-York. At the very bottom right, is \"Negative by Brady & Co., Washington\".See scan for details. We do combine shipping with other items.
