- EXTREMELY RARE Francis Cabot Lowell SIGNED Document -- Early TEXTILE Pioneer, Ushering in the U.S. Industrial Revolution -- Lowell (MA) named after him,America’s first planned industrial city-

EXTREMELY RARE manuscriptdocument SIGNED by early American industrialist and TEXTILE PIONEER Francis Cabot Lowell.Document is dated November 6th1797 (at Boston) and is a ninety day promissory note from Samuel Adams for $115.87, payable to “Francis C. Lowell”.The FRONT of the document is SIGNED along the bottom by BOTH Samuel Adams + Thomas Lee (attesting to Adams signature) and reads in part, “For value received I promise to pay to Francis Cabot Lowell or order one hundred fifteen dollars 87/100 in ninety days from date with interest after”.

Francis C. Lowell has genuinely SIGNED the BACKSIDE of the document, stating – ”For value rec’d (received) I order the contents of this note to be paid to Nat’l (Nathaniel) Cabot Lee according to the tenor thereof”.

NATHANIEL CABOT LEE (1772 – 1806) was a Massachusetts merchant who attended Phillips Academy and graduated from Harvard College in 1791.In July of 1798, Francis Cabot Lowell formed a partnership with his cousins Nathaniel, Joseph (Jr.), and Henry Lee, shipping goods to various foreign ports.THOMAS LEE, signer on the front of this document (as a witness), was the brother of Nathaniel C. Lee.I suspect this document is NOT signed by SAMUEL ADAMS, the signer of the Declaration of Independence, but rather by another Massachusetts person of the same name during this period. However, the docket or filing notation on the verso does resemble the signature of Samuel Adams, the signer, somewhat.Further research is probably warranted.BELOWthe docket or filing notation on the BACKSIDE is a fingerprint – perhaps that of Francis Cabot Lowell or one of the other signers of the document?

Francis Cabot Lowell was one of the true, early pioneers in the U.S. industrial revolution, and along with Samuel Slater, the two most important figures in the American textile industry. The autograph of Francis Cabot Lowell has always been impossible to obtain as he died at the relatively young age of 42.This document is one of only three examples of his signature that I have encountered over the last 30 years. This represents a superb opportunity for collectors of important, early American figures of the industrial revolution and textile industry.

FRANCIS CABOT LOWELL (1775 – 1817) was an American businessman and TEXTILE PIONEER, who wasinstrumental in bringing the INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION to the United States.Born in Newburyport (Massachusetts), he became a successful merchant who travelled to Great Britain and spent two years studying and memorizing all aspects of the British textile industry, particularly the power looms they utilized in their factories. This was critically important as the British government prohibited the export of any new technology from their country.Armed with the knowledge he had committed to memory, Lowell returned to the U.S. in 1812 and formed theBoston Manufacturing Company with the help of his brother and other business associates. The following year they purchased a paper mill site along the Charles River in Waltham (Massachusetts), establishing a new factory that sought to improve upon the power loom technology that Lowell acquired in Britain, as well as being the very first to integrate both spinning and weaving in the same factory.Francis Cabot Lowell died in 1817 from pneumonia at the young age of 42, only a few years after building his first mill. The city of Lowell, in Massachusetts, was America’s first planned industrial city and was named after Francis Cabot Lowell.
