~ Very Rare Irish 1916 Medal & General Service Medal 1917-1921 - James Cassels ~The Easter Rising set of medals were awarded to James Cassels, living (in 1916) at 42 Lower Mayor Street, Dublin and imprisoned at the Frongoch internment camp from June to July 1916.Both medals are named.The 1916 Medal is named to "193 James Cassels" and the Irish War Of Independence General Service Medal to "602 James Cassels". The later was awarded with the "Comrac" clasp (meaning combat or action). The medals were issued in 1941.His name can be found among the Irish fighting at the General Post Office in O'Connell Street and those fighting at Jacob's Factory.The pair comes with the Irish independence fighters list. Cassels's name was misspelled (Cassells instead of Cassels) by the author of the list but we have his email where he confirms it was his mistake.Both medals come in their original boxes, with their original paper label that reads "With the Compliments of the President of Ireland" on one side and a Celtic message on the other and with the box used to send one of them. On this box the 1941 post stamps are still visible.~ The 1916 Medal ~This medal was instituted on 24th January 1941 by the Irish Republican Government and was presented to participants deemed to have taken part in the Rising in Dublin on Easter Monday 1916, to members of Cumann na mBann who attended the casualties and to rural units of the Irish Volunteers, later declared eligible for the award. Only 1906 medals were issued.This medal is shaped as a star of eight points, based broadly on the pattern of the Irish Army cap badge, but with no inscription on the sword belt and the figure of the mythological Celtic Warrior Cuchulainn.~ The General Service Medal ~This medal was instituted in January 1941 and was awarded to those who took part in the struggle for independence between the Eastern Uprising 1916 to ratification of the treaty on independence in 1921.
The Comrac clasp was awarded to those who took active part in the military operations. 15000 medals were issued with this clasp and from these only 1080 were named.~ Dimensions ~Both medals have a diameter of 38 mm.~ Condition ~Both medals are in excellent condition with their original ribbons. The boxes have signs of wear as expected but they still are in good shape.
