Very Rare Large Ancient Chinese Han Dynasty Terracotta Warrior Horse Rider 206BC:
$809.00

A very large and exceptionally rare ancient ChineseHan dynasty figure ofa Yangling horse riderwarrior, dating to approximately 206 BC - 220 AD.

Far rarer than the standing \'Stick man\' typethis piece depicts a seated horse rider.

With a linear, slender form, this figure of a man is shown nude. His finely carved and painted facial features lend a sense of personality, he wears his long hair tied into a tight bun, representing both filial piety and social control. The large feet schematically rendered, the upper body with insertion holes for arms. The wonderful ochre pigment remains as vibrant today as it would\'ve appeared in antiquity. There is an imposing sense of monumentality to this piece, its overall uniformity reflecting Han society\'s emphasis upon political and social unity.

Figures such as this were made to accompany the Han elite into the afterlife, providing protection and acting as a display of wealth and status. In antiquity this piece would have appeared very different, dressed in beautiful robes of silk and cotton adorned with intricate patterns.

With a striking, almost abstract aesthetic, the Yangling figures are highly distinctive from a great deal of the ming-ch\'i produced during the Han Dynasty and are some of the most decorative of all ancient Chinese figurative art.

The most famous group of these figures is known from Yangling in Xi\'an, Shaanxi province, central China.
