Very Rare, Massive ALTEC LANSINGAHT2300 Powered Subwoofer THX Certified with Two Superb Carbon Fiber Woofers -MSRP $1,200 / Made in the USA!
This AltecLansing AHT2300 subwoofer was designed to work with the Altec Lansing AHTSpeaker System which also consists of the AHT 2200 and AHT 2100 speakers. This five piece THX speaker system (includingthis AHT 2300 subwoofer) retailed for a whopping $2,400 back in 1992

Thissubwoofer is designed like a sandwich with two large plate surfaces thatsuspend the subwoofer and amp in the middle. One of the 10” Carbon Fiber cones faces up and the other 10” Carbon Fiberwoofer faces down – neither are directly visible because they are covered bythe top and bottom plates, and the sound emanates from the gaps between theplates. Please note that this sub has a verylarge footprint (19” x 27”), and the sub is really heavy – 85 pounds!

Note thatin most of my photos I show the subwoofer with the two panels removed in orderto display the amplifier and the two woofers, and I also positioning the sub ina vertical position in most photos to make it easier to photograph. The sub is designed to be used lying flatwith both the top and bottom plates attached.

Thesubwoofer is in excellent shape overall, and everything works. The two excellent carbon fiber woofers are infantastic condition with no blemishes, no voice coil rub and the butyl rubbersurrounds are like new – they should last a lifetime and will not decomposelike foam rubber surrounds. All of thecontrols function without issue, and while getting the crossover frequencyadjustment to the 50 Hz position is a little sticky, it does get there andworks fine. I’ve owned a lot ofsubwoofers, and to be honest I was not impressed with the output of thisamp. It is 100 watts, and while that initself is certainly not high output power wise, this sub did not have the slam Iwould have expected from the size (and the cost) of this sub. I don’t have the other matching Altec LansingAHT speakers it was designed to be used with (AHT2200 and AHT2100), but inusing it with other smaller speakers it worked fine as a musical sub filling inthe lower octaves. However it did notgive me the bone-rattling home theater experience that I would expect from ahigh end subwoofer. The specs say thatit goes down to 26Hz, and that certainly might be the case, but the soundoutput level left me wanting more. Thatbeing said, it works without issue and has never malfunctioned, and the ampheat output is not an issue at all. Itcomes with an attached power cable that is six feet long. The bottom plate has a cut away portion tofacilitate cable terminations. Theterminations are in excellent condition and work fine. The control panel is in great shape with noscrapes or trauma, and all of the lettering is legible with minimum wear. Thereis some minor scuffing and scrapes on the outer edges of the very large top andbottom panels, but nothing major.

There isvery little online to research about this AHT2300 subwoofer and the rest of theTHX Altec Lansing AHT speaker system. They are all very rare, and getting detailed information was noteasy. I could not find an Owners Manualonline and gathered what I do know from a variety of sources.

The controlpanel is fixed on one end of the sub, and the controls are laid out as follows:

·Volumedial

·Equalizerdial which raises and lowers the output by around 100 Hz

·Crossoverfrequency dial with four settings: 50 Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz and 150Hz (THX).

·CrossoverSlope button to set crossover at either 18dB or 24 dB per octave

·Phasesetting button 180 degrees on or off to reverse the subwoofer\'s phase when thatis necessary to move the low frequency node to another location

There arealso two indicator lights on the control panel:

·Powerindicator light (the amplifier turns on automatically when fed an audiosignal).

·Dynamiclevel-control circuit, which prevents the subwoofer from being driven intoexcessive distortion at very high levels; when the circuit becomes active, thelight goes out.

Theamplifier accepts two types of inputs:

·Ithas two RCA type stereo line level inputs

·Ithas four Clip style (for bare wire or pins) for speaker-level inputs
