28\" long and 2 ft all around the largest part, the largest we ever found

A Dani tribal gathering container, an original scarceand very long decorated Calabash Gourd or Travel Vessel (with a shoulder strap made out of a valuable money belt) hard to grown to this size except with daily tending, using weights.

Decorations of nassa shells all over aswell as

bands of hand woven rope twine made outof bark or other fibers, some yellow motifs were created with woven dendrobium orchid fiber which stems turn yellow with age and are used for color, some cassowary feathers adorn it also, from the rare cassowary bird native of the jungles of Papua new Guinea, a fierce adversary from the ostrich family that can kill a man with one kick:

It was once used in a tribe

of the Baliem valley and mountains, by aDani shaman, to store goods and herbs( used in magic) while travelling in the bush.

We collected it on the premises while in aDani village ( this is an old collector item, rare and hard to find in thefield, one sometimes has to hike for a few days to find such pieces)

The Dani of the centralhighlands, perhaps the best-known of the Irianese, live in communities of tidylittle thatch-and-wood huts, surrounded by neatly kept gardens of sweet potatovines. Kept apart from each other for centuries by hostile terrain and longtraditions of inter-tribal warfare, headhunting and cannibalism, these remotetribes has evolved an astonishing degree of cultural and linguistic diversityin spite of the isolation. Dani religion, like warfare, is based on spiritplacation. Staying on the good side of the spirits was crucial for survival andprosperity. All ceremonies and pig killings were directed a winning theirfavor. Sacred objects, called ganekhe, which included stones which we alsocarry, can be manipulated to prevent the approach of spirits. Enclosures forghosts, with bundles of grass representing the deceased, are located far fromthe villages.
