This is a veray rare and authentic 100% antique russian icon of saint John the baptist, dated around 1870-1890, probably from southern Russia or Ucraine. The icon is very well preserved, it has not been cleaned or restored, it is 100 authentic and contains the authentic varnish which gives a very nice light yellow oxidised patina.It depicts the beheading of Saint John the Baptist in jail and in the corner we see Salome the princess who is waiting to take the head in order to offer it it her mother.The icon is painted by a very talented master and belonges in the academic school of iconpainting that dominated in the Russian iconopainting in the 19th century, especially in the bic cities which were more influenced by the western art.It contains the theology of the orthodox iconography but the technique is not the technique of the old and very severe masters, it follows the tendencies of the art of it\'s time.Very rare icon, very well preserved.
