One or both sides of a coin were ground smooth, allowing the engraver to decorate the flat sides with initials, names, pictorial scenes, dates or tokens of love. Often, the token was given to a sweetheart in times of war as a gesture of remembrance and love or to commemorate a birthday, anniversary or death.
{ ABOUT THE CHARM }Made from a Queen Victorian Canadian coin, the front of this love token is hand-engraved AAG with a decorative, organic frame. A hole has been drilled at the top for a jump ring. Back has a small piece of copper soldered on the side perhaps to reinforce the hole? AGE: Late 1800sMETAL: Coin silver CONDITION: In nice, vintage condition. A silky, smooth patina has developed over time. The detail on both sides of the token has rubbed smooth from years of wear.
