VICTORIAN COTTON BUSTLE GOWN WITH FLORAL EMBROIDERY:

This bustle gown is of a unusual brown mesh or net cotton base, and is adorned with hand embroidered appliques in striking floral designs. There is tan lace trimming the edges. Some black ribbons have been added here and there, possibly for mourning. These are basted on, and could be easily removed. The seams inside the bodice are edged with silk. The skirt has an asymmetrical shape in back, with a \"foldover\" styling at one side, with a narrow train in bak. The entire ensemble is unlined. The top fastens with hooks and eyes, the skirt with two large brass hook and eyes. There is also a beige silk petticoat, with a pleated hem, that came with the dress. It has some fraying around the hook and eye, a few spots, but is ok other than that.

In a larger size, the bodice measures 40\" around at the bust, and is 15\" between the shoulder seams in back. The skirt measures 30\" around at the waist, is 41\" long, measured in front. There is a 2 3/4\" tuck taken to the skirt, this could be taken out if desired.

Very good condition, with 3-4 small spots at one sleeve, 2-3 scattered spots elsewhere. The brown lace trim has some slight color variation here and there, one place with a few darker spots, these are minor. I saw one break in the mesh. A few thread \"eyes\" seem to be missing on the bodice. The skirt has a 2\" separation at the waistband.

Please note that the cotton mesh ground is a subtle brown, the silk appliques are ivory, with the sheen of silk. I have shown the gown over a white petticoat and jacket, and have also used padding to simulate a bustle era crinoline. A different effect could be achieved with the use of undergarments in various colors. There is one beige silk petticoat included, as mentioned above. Early mid 1870\'s.
