A Sterling Bulldog Trophy GobletA Victorian sterling silver goblet engraved as a Bulldog trophy with marks for Sheffield, 1888, and the maker’s mark “HA” for Henry Atkins. The goblet has two cartouches. The first is engraved, “Beckton Dog Show / Presented By / T. Wilton, Esq. / To / [blank] / As A Challenge Trophy / For The Best Dog / In The Show / November 1889.” The other is engraved, 1889 / Won By / Mr. W. G. Smartt’s / Bulldog / Jubilee Monarch K.C.S.B. 27572) / Died May 6th 1890 / 1890 / Won By Mr. W. G. Smartt’s / Bulldog / Ashton Billy (K.C.S.B. 25370)” Although not engraved on the trophy, Mr. Smartt’s Ashton Billy won again in 1891 and Mr. Smartt retired the goblet. From Smartt’s own scrapbooks of newspaper and magazine clippings we found several obituaries for Jubilee Monarch. One writer called him a “very bad faced one,” but admired him for his good body. The same article goes on to state, “Jubilee Monarch died under sad circumstances – I mean sad for himself. He died in the act of exercising his procreative faculties. Poor chappie! That was hard luck.” The goblet stands 9 3/8 inches tall and makes a very nice display piece or use it as a vase for a small bouquet. It weighs about 9 1/2 ounces.
Overseas shipping with first class mail would be less than Priority but it can not be insured.
