A vintageMother-of-Pearl Clam Shell Hinged Purse, Trinket, Pill or Rosary Box, or it could have been used as a place to keep a nice scent for when there was otherwise unpleasant smells.A Victorian accessory, where the Lady had several necessities all together on a chain that hung on her waist.This is aHand Carved Mother-of-Pearl Clam Shell with silver or brass floral overlay and hinged lid.

Great Victorian style and extraordinary craftsmanship, this little box is made from exceptional Mother-of-Pearl, and framed in a rich patina of brass or silver.

A finely crafted floral crown adorns the cap and holds the respective sides of the chain in place. The lid of the cap is also a piece of hand carved mother of pearl.The crown features two loops on either side, to hold the chain.The cap has a tiny hinge on the back and clicks closed, and works splendidly.The front of the shell has been hand carved with a lattice window.The piece has wonderful smooth texture and beautiful iridescence on the shell. The \"silver\" parts have a wonderful, aged patina. It looks almost like brass or silver, but I can not be certain. To me, it seems to have a golden highlight to it.

This is an extraordinary piece of old-world elegance. In excellent antique condition overall. A one-of-a-kind treasure!
