Victorian Trade Card, “Dr. Thomas\' Eclectric Oil\". Measures 2 5/8 inches by 4 inches. Late 1800\'s. This is an advertising card which says \"Dr. Thomas\' Eclectric Oil\" along the upper edge of her dress. The front background is a metallic gold. The back of the card advertises Dr. Thomas\' product as being useful both internally and externally. The ad goes on to list numerous testimonials stating that it cured asthma, hot water burns, bad cold, rheumatism, catarrh, bronchitis, croup, and a severe case of piles. As a note, Dr. Thomas\' Eclectric Oil was formaulated by Dr. S.N. Thomas in Phelps, New York in the 1840\'s and contained spirits of turpentine, camphor, oil of tar, red thyme, and specially formulated fish oil. On some ads Dr. Thomas stated that his product would cure toothaches, ear aches, and even deafness within 3 minutes. The product was extremely successful, both nationally and internationally, and sold millions of bottles all the way up until the end of World War II.
