For your consideration, this wonderful Victorian 1859silver-platewedding basket with handle by Elkington, Mason & Co. This features a lovely detailed leafy grape cluster trim and handle and etched patterns. It bears a very handsome griffin head incised in the center of the bowl. This bears thehallmark panel on the underside rim. It is a little hard to read, but I have another one of these, acquired from the same estate sale, and itbears the U date-mark of 1859.They are identical and are amazing together. The other one bears the hallmark, though it is easier to read, and unlike this one, it has the number60568 stamped into the underside rim.

This is 11" X 13.25" and is 3 3/8" to top of rim and 10" to top of handle.

Elkington and Co - George Richards Elkington and Henry Elkington patented the process of silverplating by depositing a thin layer of silver onto base metal by electrolysis. They developed this in the 1830s and by the end of the decade it had replaced the Old Sheffield plate technique.

In 1868 Queen Victoria permitted much of the Royal Plate to be copied by the Elkingtons.
