Vintage 1930s Armor Bronze Cast Hand Painted Pirate Bookends Art Deco W/ Labels:
$89.00

You\'re offerding on a rare pair of pirate themed bookends - Each weighs about a pound and a half and stands about7 1/2\" tall on a 3 1/2\" X 2 1/4\" pedestal, and they are beautifully cold-painted by hand in striking reds, whites and blues. Each still retains their original felted bottoms with the paper labels identifying them as \"Armor Bronze Co. - Taunton, Mass. - Armor goods of merit USA Bronze - by master craftsmen\". Armor produced many decorative bronze decorative consumer pieces from about 1910 into the 1940s - these pirates are one of their best-known and most collectible designs - the Taunton location on the sticker indicates probably 1930s vintage on these pieces, as they relocated to Taunton from New York City in 1935.

This Pirate, who looks more than a little like Errol Flynn, to me anyway, strikes a bold, swashbuckling pose, shirt pulled open in a way that only a pirate captain or a Bee Gee can pull off, a knife and a pistol crossed through the sash around his waist, sword tip and right foot planted confidently atop his pirate chest. The figure stands atop a pedestal that features a scene with a pitate ship sailing along the horizon, sailing away from some wind-blown palm trees at left. A little bit of paint loss, mostly on the shirt front, shoulders and shirt back of the pirate, but the majority of the paint is intact, much more than you typically find on cold-painted pieces like this. One of the pieces does have a scratch or gauge along the left side of the pedestal (see photos), the way it it is formed and appears makes me think that it could have actually come out of the factory this way, but still a visible issue of note.

Wonderful pieces from the Art Deco heyday of the cast bookend - please review photos carefully to make your own determination of overall condition and appeal, and don\'t hesitate to ask any questions prior to offerding - thanks for looking!
