Signed: HAL 9-23-76 STONEWAREHal Riegger (1913-2005) earned his B.S. and M.A. degrees at the New York State College of Ceramics and Ohio State University.
He had taught ceramics for years and wrote three books on the subject.
He was also the first American to begin to explore the technique of raku.
Hal Riegger reached back to the ancient, primitive roots of ceramic art in his earthy vessels and sculptural forms.
Riegger\'s work is primarily based on simple utilitarian forms--bowls, goblets, storage pots and slab-like serving dishes.
Marked by a cultivated simplicity, Reigger\'s pieces seem to embody the spirit of Zen Buddhism and the Japanese tea ceremony.
A rough, asymmetrical bowl made of coarse clay seems to be caught in a state between being and nonbeing,
springing up from the earth and returning to it simultaneously.

A pioneer in the American raku movement, Reigger had taught at universities and art school all over the country andthe author of several texts and articles on raku, which reaches back to 16th century Japan and its tea ceremony. Dimensions:
