ORIGINAL Byers Choice CAROLER now THIRTY FOUR YEARS OLD!!!!
One of the first pieces designed and made by Joyce Byerswas The Belsnickle, later named the Old World Santa,in the 1970\'s. The bases were rough and hand shaped.The Belsnickle was created from 1978-1986by Joyce\'s first employees and featured a Red Velvet suit,white fur trim, a real fur beard,and carried a switch and gold bell with holly leaves.
The Belsnickle is the opposite of the Christ Kringle.(Kris Krindlel) His role was to frighten and punishthe naughty children. Usually portrayed by a neighborin outlandish dress of fur, with a bushy beardand a grinning mask, carrying a buggy whip and a sack of treats,the Belsnickle was a frightening sight.Children would tremble in his presence.He would jabber in some unknown tongueas he threw a handful of treats onto the floor.Older children would shyly pick one up.If a boy behaved rudely or was unable to recite a Bible verse,the Belsnickle would snap him across the back with his whip.Small children would hold onto their mothers with fright.
This is the Vintage Early Byers Choice BelsnickleOld World Santa from 1984.(a reproduction was created in 1998in honor of the 20th anniversary of Joyce\'s creation:see newsletter photo)
He wears a Red Velvet Suit and Hood trimmedin White Fur and tied with a Black Rope.His brown wool knickers help keep him warmon those freezing cold nights along with high black boots.His forehead and face is wrinkled but he has kind eyes...and his beard is white and full.He caries the straw switchand has a gold bell to ring to announce his presence.
The Dark Green Rough Base is inscribed Byers 84 and the bottom is green felt coveredwith the old Byers Choice Gold Foil Labelsticker marked 1984.(These often fell off as they were only glued on the base).
Height: 13 Inches Tall.
Excellent vintage condition for a THIRTY FOUR YEAR OLD CAROLER.The velvet has been steamed to renew its nap.
