Up for offer is a lot of 2 holiday novelty larger-size candles in shape of choir boys in black robes.
In 1939 the Socony Vacuum Oil company commissioned Gurley Candles to make candles as a way to recycle and reuse excess paraffin which was a by-product of the oil refinery business. The first products to use the excess paraffin were called the Tavern Brand. In 1949, Mr. Gurley purchased the Tavern Brand and changed the company name to Gurley Novelty Candles. Thus, novelty holiday candles with a Tavern Brand label were made prior to 1949. Those with a Gurley Novelty Candle label were made after 1949.
Sellers used these and other vintage Christmas items in a holiday display in their 100-year old home, but since sellers are downsizing, sellers hope someone else can get these wonderful pieces of Christmases past and enjoy them as much as we have over the years.
