Amazing example of Egyptian Art Deco textile art, this 4 foot long wall hanging is all hand pieced and appliqued, and was made for the souvenir/tourist trade circa 1920s 1930s.The earthy palette of rough woven ground and printed cotton fabrics have aged beautifully. The top portion of the hanging depicts a bearded pharaoh-like figure holding a bowl of lotus blossoms. Also shown are the Eye of Horus--ancient Egyptian royal symbol of protection, royal power and good health--and a tablet decorated with hieroglyphs. The bottom portion of the hanging depicts trees, pyramids and seated camels.Overall, in very good condition. There are some small rust colored storage stains on the fabric ground, but they do not really pop out at you due to the texture and color of the ground. There are fold lines as the piece had been stored folded in a cedar chest for years. And there are some areas of worn cotton on the bottom portion of the picture, which also do not stand out due to the overall muted palette.
