All of the art work and collectibles being sold by Adams-Byrd Fine Art & Antiques have been collected and selected one at a time by the proprietor, an art historian with many years of training and experience in university art history departments, museums, galleries, and historic sites both in the U.S. and abroad. In most cases the pieces offered for sale on are from the business inventory (the business has been based in the Washington, D.C. area for many years). Our inventory is extremely large, so the majority of the pieces we are putting on have never been displayed in any of our retail locations. Occasionally, we are also selling pieces from our personal collection. The art and collectibles that we are offering to buyers are special and unique pieces that have been carefully “curated” by us.

This vintage American folk art wood carving remains a bit ofa mystery. We have owned it formany years. When we purchased it,we also bought a baseball wood carving presumably by the same artist -- and both the football scene and the baseball scene were dated by sports memorabilia experts to the 1920s. If this is from the 1920s, perhaps it is a player in one ofthe games when green and gold were the colors worn by Notre Dame footballplayers.

This vintage folk art figurine, carved by hand from wood,shows the athlete in action. Thedesign of the “scene” (he is on abase with what appears to be the goal line at a diagonal – with a red Flag),the carving, the painting, etc.all work together to create one of the best examples of sports folk artthat we have ever seen.

We have some ideas about who this is, but we won’t speculateuntil we are more certain. If yourecognize the player, the team or the number 33, please feel free to give usmore information.

This vintage original work of art is not signed (either with a name or date). If we had to date it, we would guesstimate the 1920s / 1930s / 1940s / 1950s time frame.

In this tableau, the football player is running with theball. The sculptor (wood carver) has used the natural woodas the skin color (arms, legs, face) and has used green, gold, black and whiteto paint the shirt, pants, shoes, socks, helmet and eyes. The football was painted a reddish brown. The rectangular wood base is paintedgreen (with a white diagonal line) and “texture” has been applied. At the corner there is a red cloth Flagon a wood (painted silver) pole.

This is a one of a kind original. This was hand carved from wood. It is a unique piece of Americana from the world of sports /athletics / football (although we are not yet sure if it is a college, university, or professional player). Other thanthe baseball folk art (by the same artist) that we sold years ago, this is the most interesting sportsfolk art wood carving that we have seen.

[The private collector who bought our baseball scene --- aWhite Sox player and a Red Sox player with an umpire in between them --- hasmentioned that, after having owned it for many years (and changing hiscollecting specialties) he would consider selling it, so we might broker thesale --- and put it on !]

This folk art is in good used vintage condition. All the surfaces are in good condition. It has been well taken care of and protected from damage. The only thing that has \"bothered\" its surface is dust.
