These actually are rare.
This is an authentic pair of vintage American Optical Aviator sunglasses with the official AOPA shield emblem build into the bridge. These were manufactured by AO and sold through mail order. If you look on page 60 of June 1952 issue of Flying you will see the page titled AOPA News. It is athree column spread and at the bottom of themiddle column, just above the cartoon of a hotel porter, is an advertisement detailing these sunglasses for sale.
The frame is gold tone and each temple arm is marked American Optical 97. These fit the size measurements for the old American Optical Original Pilot 55:
- Temple Width: 137 mm
- Bridge Width: 20 mm
- Lens Height: 44.1 mm
- Lens width: 54 mm
The temple arms have linear detailing that match the nasal bridge where the enamel AOPA shield is affixed.
The lenses are ready to wear and in very good condition. The nose pads and ear pieces are clear hard plastic and don\'t show cracks or teeth marks.
These are an extraordinary pair of quality aviators that bear the AOPA official shield from the 1950\'s. Great for a collection or daily wear.
These come with the case shown. That is how they were found at a sale in Southern California.
