VINTAGE ANTIQUE PUCK CYLINDER HORN PHONOGRAPH!! All parts are old and original. These both have the lyre bases-one is cast iron and the other is heavy pressed steel. Both have some surface rust(see photos). Both spring motors are operating-one has the original governor-the other governor is missing. No reproducers. Both have original keys. The witch\'s hat horn is in quite good shape with no dents in the bell-which appears to have been silver plated at one time. Both original petal-type horns are rough but restorable-no holes or rustout. Buyer pays actual shipping/insurance-no handling or packing charges. NOTE--shipping will be for 18 pounds shippedThe Puck was a brilliant invention. Itwas thought up by notedtalking machine entrepreneur Gianni Bettini. The Puck did exactly whatit was designed to do with no extra frills -- it played a cylinderphonograph record. It soon became apparent that the Puck was avirtually perfect instrument from all standpoints-- it could beinexpensively produced, sold at a reasonable price, and functionedreliably: a virtual \"People\'s Phonograph.\" Many factories commenced tomanufacture Pucks in Germany and France. Most Puck phonographs were sold without the solid wood base, perhaps ebony. The mechanism was uncomplicated and mounted on a metalbase in the shape of a lyre. The motor was essentially modified from aclock motor and this one runs well....smoothly and quietly, very basic but amazingly effective -- it runs off a STRING-- instead of a belt, it uses a string. Pucks were phonos that grew out of the German tradition ofclock-making.
Pucks were also imported into the USA. Columbia did a land-officebusiness in Pucks distributingthem in the USA.The Puck was designedwith just enough technology to do its job at the time To listen to a cylinder, take it out of its box with great care, avoiding to touch the recorded surface. This is easily done by inserting two fingers inside. Push it gently onto the mandrel as far as it can go without risk of breaking. Wind up the mechanism of your phonograph and delicately position the reproducer stylus on the first groove. Turn on the motor. If the voice seems too high or too low, adjust the speed with the small thumbwheel.
That is approximately what you could read on a phonograph\'s user manual around 1900 !
