Russian World War 1 or World War II Map or messenger bag

I picked this item up while traveling in Riga, Latvia at a Russian antique store. The store owner didn\'t speak English, so I am unable to confirm the history of this item. It had a piece of Russian newspaper in it and I\'m pretty sure this is a Russian bag that would have been used sometime during World War I or II for carrying maps. There is a clear vinyl space that folds out to view a map, while keeping it protected from the elements.

While this certainly makes a great collector\'s piece, it could certainly be used for everyday use and has a ton of life left in it. The brown leather is in excellent condition and has that vintage worn look. The strap is showing signs of being a bit brittle in some areas, but thiscould easily be repaired by someone who fixes leather items.

Dimensions: 8" wide by 12" high by 2" deep

-Perfect size bag for an ipad or carry-all
-Small pocket inside would have been used to hold a compass, perhaps? Would now be good for holding a USB jump drive, cell phone battery, or something small.
-Space for holding pencils and other small items
-Fits a full sized iPad perfectly (see pics, iPad not included)
-Has an integrated cloth (possibly used to wipe off dry erase markings over the maps below??)
-Clear view area is probably where soldiers placed their maps
-Makes a great carry-all or hand-bag
