Vintage Copper Hanukkah Menorah Islamic Inlay Silver gold inlay Judaica Jerusalem A spectacular 80 years old Hanukkah Menorah (Hanukkia) adorned with a view of Jerusalem and Biblical Symbols.Heads of Lions,Stars of david and some of the windows are inlaid in gold (usually high karat 20-22gold was used) while the rest of the inlay work is Silver.The Writing in Hebrew Says \" Jerusalem the Sacred City \".
In Jewish Tradition the Hanukkah holiday is Celebrated for the Remembrance of the Miracle that took place during the revolt against the Greek king Antiochus VI. After the Greeks where driven out from the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem the Custom of lighting the Menorah in the temple was to be restarted. However only one little oil container was found and it had enough oil for lighting the Sacred Menorah for only one day. Yet every morning the little pot was miraculously refiled and that went on for 8 days until new oil had been profaned and brought to the Temple.
Traditionally every day ,during the Holiday, a growing number of candles is lit from 1 until 8 (in the last day). While the center higher placed candle is used to light each of the eight candles and so altogether there are 9 candles in the Hanukiah.
This Hanukkia can be used with Candels or oil lamps and can be held on a shelf,table or Hanged on a wall.
Origins of this Hanukkia are in South Turkey form around the 1930\'s.The Hanukkia is very solid and in an almost perfect condition except for the little \"lip/nozzle\" of the upper Shamash Candle holder.In the 19th and early 20th Century, when such traditional metal works where made, was a time of revival of the old Mameluke style. Metal smiths and artists worked to resurrect the Mameluke style. Both in Europe and among the Muslims grew an interest in such craftsmanship. The craftsmen inlaid softer metals such as silver and gold ,into harder metals commonly copper and Brass but also into coarser metals. Such vases exemplify the Mameluke revival period, taking ordinary metal and inlaying it to create an impressive and high-status item.Out of the Craftsman where also Jewish artists and Metal smiths who occasionally ,by order or to a smaller target market adorned the metal works with Jewish ornaments ,Biblical writings and Jewish Symbols.These as a whole where much less common and where practiced mostly in Central Ottoman empire (as opposed to General Mameluke style inlaying that was common also Egypt). Such, making the Jewish motives ornamented pottery and metal works a high valued collectors item.
