Vintage, Dogon, Mali Cast Bronze Primordial Couple/5 1/2H\" :
$275.00

Old, African cast bronze sculpture, 5 1/2\" H & 2 1/4”W, from the Dogon in Mali. This wonderful metal work, showing a couple with the man putting his arm around a woman holding a baby, is an important theme of the Dogon people, and has been seen in wood carvings,terra-cotta (as far back as the 12th-16th century), and small cast works from the 15th-19th century (See“Couples in African Art”, an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2004). The online information on its meaning is vast and is often called a \"primordial couple”, mythical male and female ancestors that include Nommos, and the original Dogon ancestors. One source states that“primordial couple” is used to“mask the true state of our knowledge”. (See“Art of the Dogon, Selections from the Lester Wunderman Collection\" by Kare Ezra, an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art).
I was told by my African friend and trader, that bought these in BurkinaFaso, that the bronze works I was recently able to buy, had various meanings for the individuals who owned them. Many would have been taken into the“society house” (similar to a meeting place, church, shrine) and used for rituals and personal issues.
Watch for the other wonderful bronze works I bought and will list. _gsrx_vers_775 (GS 7.0.3 (775))
